Deviled

Deviled is a process of cooking using very hot seasonings such as mustard or cayenne and stuffing the food item with this preparation. The best and the most popular examples of dishes using the deviled method are the deviled eggs and the deviled hams. Both these dishes prepared using the deviled method are favorites at parties, picnics or simple home dinners. The deviled method originates from the word ‘ devil ’, implying a hot and spicy dish, the association coming from the hot hell where the devil lives. Procedure

 

In order to obtained deviled version of any food a spicy mixture is prepared for coating or stuffing that food item such as meat, egg, chicken, ham, tomatoes, etc. The mixture can be prepared with mayonnaise and mustard, or cayenne.

 

 

History

 

The Deviled Method dates back to the 15th century, originating in ancient Rome. Recipes of stuffed and boiled eggs have been found in the ancient Roman cookbook of Apicus and at places in medieval Europe, although the term ‘deviled’ was not used then. The term was first coined in England in the eighteenth century. However, even prior to the popular deviled eggs the term was first used in reference to kidneys and other meats.

 

William Underwood has been credited for introducing the famous deviled ham in 1867. Canned deviled hams are still sold by his company under the brand name – Underwood’s Devilled Ham.

 

 

Process

 

In order to prepare a deviled recipe one requires normal kitchen equipments for mixing the ingredients of the stuffing or the hot mixture. Additionally, one also requires an egg serving dish if a deviled egg recipe is prepared, or else any other serving dish for other deviled recipes. The ingredients which go into making the mixture hot may differ from mustard or cayenne pepper.
