In a large frying pan, brown the chicken in the salad oil or shortening.
As pieces are done, place them in a 3-quart (3 L) casserole.
Add the remaining ingredients to the fat in pan, bring to a boil and pour over chicken.
Cover and bake 1 hour in a 350°F (180°C) oven, then let cool.
Uncover and let stand until needed.
