Date Nut Loaf

Ingredients
  Dates 2 Cup (32 tbs), chopped
  Walnuts 1 Cup (16 tbs), chopped
  Vegetable shortening 1⁄3 Cup (5.33 tbs)
  Brown sugar 3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)
  Vanilla 1 Teaspoon
  Egg 1
  Sifted flour 2 Cup (32 tbs)
  Baking powder 1 Teaspoon
  Baking soda 1 Teaspoon
  Salt 1 Teaspoon
Directions

In large mixer bowl, combine dates, nuts, and vegetable shortening.
Pour in 1 cup boiling water; beat until vegetable shortening breaks into small lumps.
Cool to lukewarm, about 15 minutes.
Add sugar, vanilla, and egg; mix well.
Combine flour, baking powder, soda, and salt; add to date mixture and beat well.
Pour into 9x5x3 inch loaf pan.
Bake at 350° for 1 hour.
Cool thoroughly before slicing.
