Grilled Lemon

Grilled lemon is lemon cooked by direct application of dry heat by a process of cooking called grilling. Grilling this citrus fruit results in  its juice attaining a tangy and slightly sweet taste which makes it perfect to be used in sauces, dressings, and glazes. Grilled lemons pair very well with grilled meat. The lemons are caramelized when grilled, resulting in the addition of some sweetness to natural tart flavor of lemons. The flavor of the dish, sauce, or dressing, for which it is used, is augmented by the usage of grilled lemons.

 

Raw lemon’s acidity plays a great role in balancing the salty and sweet flavors of the dish with which it is consumed, hence helping to provide a unique taste to the dish. However, the lemon juice can be too strong at times; hence it is suggested to use lemons in grilled form.  Grilling the lemons prior to consuming its juice would help in mellowing out the acidic intensity of the fruit, while preserving its flavor.  

 

How to Grill Lemons?

Lemons can be grilled either on an outdoor grill or a grill pan. Olive oil and lemons are the two basic ingredients required for grilling lemons. The ends of whole lemons are trimmed off so as to allow the lemons to sit securely. The lemons are then cut in halves (not lengthwise) and the seeds are removed with the help of a knife. Olive oil is brushed on the lemons’ exposed surface and the lemons are then grilled on moderate heat for a few minutes until the flesh turns golden brown. The lemons are placed cut side down on the grill and turned over after a minute or two and grilled again for another couple of minutes. The lemons can also be grilled after seasoning them with pepper and salt, along with brushing them with olive oil.

 

Uses of Grilled Lemons

A couple of uses of grilled lemon have been discussed hereunder:

 

  • The lemon juice obtained from grilled lemons can be used as one of the ingredients for salad dressing, sauce, vinaigrette, or glazes.

 

  • Grilled lemons are popularly served along with grilled salmon, grilled shrimp, grilled lamb, grilled chicken, and other types of grilled meat. Grilled lemons are served as garnish for grilled meat or grilled seafood for squeezing over.

Grilled lemon is enriched with the goodness of lemon, which is the smallest citric fruit popular all over the world. The fruit is quite healthy and provides very less calories, with 100 g of lemon providing only 29 calories.  The fruit does not contain any fat or cholesterol, but is a good source of dietary fiber.  Further, the citric fruit is rich in several essential minerals and vitamins like copper, iron, calcium, potassium, and vitamins B complex and C. The nutrients present in lemons help in protecting an individual from several health related risks like obesity, heart diseases, arthritis, and cancer.
