Yakitori

Yakitori is a skewered grilled chicken, which is speared on various sticks. It is a famous Japanese dish and is prepared by making use of all chicken parts like skin, liver, thighs etc. Bamboo skewer is used commonly for skewering and grilling the chicken. In most of the cases, the dish is grilled over charcoal. 


 

Yakitori is very popular in Japan among salaried class. Most of the men usually have this food item while going back home after work. After a long hard day’s work, people in Japan feel very relaxed after having this popular food stuff. During early evening, restaurants serving this dish are filled with office going people, who usually stop for having yakitori as a quick snack item before hiring their transport for home. They really like the dish with hot sake. Sake is a Japanese rice drink which is alcoholic in nature and is made up of fermented rice.

 


At some places in Japan, various choices are offered to the customers with respect to yakitori. In some restaurants, yakitori recipe may include exotic delicacies such as rabbit, sparrow or asparagus. These kinds of delicacies are offered by only a few fancy places in Japan. However, most of the restaurants stick to basic preparation method of using chicken in this popular Japanese dish. Most of the patrons prefer to have beer with this dish; though some simple people prefer to go for soft drinks only. A soup made up of rice and tea, known as chazuke, is preferred by most of the people in Japan, after having yakitori.

 

 

Yakitori Recipe - Ingredients
The main ingredients that are required for preparing yakitori dish are boneless pieces of chicken, green onion, mirin, soy sauce, maple syrup or honey, and wooden spears of small size.

 


Yakotri Recipe - Preparation
In most of the places in Japan, yakitori is served with tare-sauce. So, the preparation method of this dish includes the preparation of both tare-sauce and grilled chicken.

 


Tare sauce recipe
Tare-sauce is prepared by making a mixture of soy sauce, sugar, honey, water and mirin. The mixture is poured in a pan and heated. The sauce is ready to be used now.

 


Grilled chicken recipe
This part of yakitori recipe is very simple. The boneless pieces of chicken are placed in the prepared sauce. The mix is allowed to stay for a few minutes. A wooden stick is taken and pieces of chicken thighs (coated with sauce) and green onions are placed on it. Similarly all the chicken pieces and onions are placed on other wooden sticks, and the wooden sticks are placed in the oven for grilling the chicken. It is advised to wrap each wooden stick separately with aluminum foil, so as to avoid burning of the dish. The dish is allowed to grill for a few minutes.

 



Serving Yakitori
Yakitori can be served in two ways. It can be served only with salt or can be served with tare-sauce. Tare-sauce is made with sake, sugar, soy sauce and mirin. Tare-sauce is applied on skewered chicken. It is then grilled until the dish is cooked delicately. Yakitori dish is served hot.
