Teriyaki Sauce

Teriyaki Sauce is a famous Japanese sauce which is used for marinating foods or is served as a side dish to accompany various preparations. The word Teriyaki, in Japanese cuisine refers to a cooking process wherein food items such as fish, chicken and lamb are left in a sweet soya sauce marinade and are later grilled or broiled. Traditional Teriyaki Sauce recipes comprises of soy sauce, sweet rice wine also known as Mirin and sugar; although there are numerous variations to this recipe in America now. Authentic Japanese Teriyaki dishes have fish as the main ingredient whereas in America, meat such as chicken, beef and lamb are more preferred. Teriyaki sauce is not only used for marinating but it is also used to continuously baste the food while it is being grilled or broiled in order to add more flavor and to glaze the food. Two famous variations of the original recipe are Sesame Teriyaki Sauce and Asparagus Teriyaki Sauce.
