Mix the egg, shortening, buttermilk, cornmeal, soda, sugar and salt in a bowl.
Dissolve the yeast in warm water.
Stir into cornmeal mixture and beat until light and fluffy.
Add enough flour to make a soft dough and mix well.
Place on floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic.
Place in a greased bowl and turn to grease top.
Cover with a cloth and let rise until doubled in bulk.
Punch down and place in a greased loaf pan.
Bake in 350-degree oven for 50 minutes to 1 hour.
Remove from pan and wet top with cold water.
Place on side and cover with a cloth.
