Dussehra

Dussehra recipes are cooked during one of the most prominent Indian festivals of Dussehra which is celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana. It is customary to celebrate the festival with some delicious preparations and food is considered to be one of the most lavish and rich preparations made during Indian festivals, mainly because the celebrations are not limited to a single day.

 

Traditional Dussehra Preparations

As Dussehra is celebrated everywhere in India enthusiastically, recipes greatly depend on the region where they are being prepared for the occasion. Special food is cooked at homes, in restaurants and also at outdoor stands. Badam Kheer, Besan Burfi, Moong Dal Halwa, Kachori, Jalebi, Paneer Pakora, Radbi and Sandesh are some of the common traditional preparations.

 

Significance of Dussehra Food

The rich and lavish Dussehra preparations were made to celebrate the festival which traditionally signified the victory of good over evil. Over the years, the recipes and dishes have evolved, but most ingredients and preparation methods continue to remain the same.

 

Modern Dussehra Preparations and their Variations

In modern times, Dussehra recipes have managed to remain more-or-less the same with only one major difference; low-calorie versions are more popular today. Sugar, ghee (oil) and deep frying have been replaced with healthier substitutes and people today prefer to consume sweets which have been prepared with healthier ingredients like artificial sweeteners and toned milk.

 

Customary Way of Serving the Food

Although served throughout the day, as Dussehra recipes and preparations are more like snacks, the grand distribution of sweets and prasada or after-prayer offering is done after the Ravana effigy is burned.
