Dal Dhokli

Dal Dhokli is a traditional Gujarati dish. It is made of pulses and flour. This dish is very much similar to dumplings dipped in lentil curry.  It is a healthy and nutritious dish which is savored by people of all age groups. Dal Dhokli is different from the regular food eaten in India.

 

Origin And History Of Dal Dhokli

A Dal Dhokli recipe is said to have originated in Gujarat state of India. Though as per some people the dish belongs to Rajasthan. A Dal Dhokli is also very popular in Maharashtra and many other states of India.

 

Method of Preparation And Ingredients Used In Dal Dhokli Recipes

To make Dal Dhokli, the dal (lentil soup) and dhoklis (dumplings) are prepared separately. For the preparation of lentil soup, the Dal Dhokli recipe uses ingredients such as pigeon peas, green grams, oil, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, chopped onions, capsicum and tomatoes. All the ingredients except tomatoes, onions and cumin seeds are pressure cooked. Oil is heated to which cumin seeds and chopped garlic is added. Once the seeds splutter onion and tomatoes are added to it. This mixture is then added to cooked lentil soup.

 

For the preparation of dhoklis, wheat flour, sesame seeds, thyme, green chili paste, oil, salt and water is used. Dough is prepared by mixing all the ingredients. It is then rolled out like flat bread. Diamond shaped dhoklis are cut and are brushed with oil on both the sides. Once done, these diamonds are dipped in the lentil soup and cooked with it.

 

This delicious Gujarati dish, Dal Dhokli is served with hot clarified butter and pickles.

 

Variations In Dal Dhokli Recipe

The recipe of Dhokli has many variations according to the taste and preferences of people. It can be made spicy and even mild. Jaggery is sometimes added to the dish to make it sweet and spicy. Peanuts and cashews also are added in many places to add to the taste of Dal Dhokli recipe.

 

Vegetables such as pumpkins, beans, potatoes and capsicum are also added in many Dal Dhokli dishes.
