Chakna

Chakna is a spicy Hyderabadi dish which is prepared with goat tripes and other digestive parts. This dish is popular amongst Hyderbadi muslims living in the locality of Charminar in Hyderabad. This dish is also popular in the Hyderabad colony of Karachi. This place is known for its own version of the dish. Chakna is also known as Chaakna and is mostly prepared and served during the Festival of Sacrifice. The Festival of Sacrifice is observed in memory of the first sacrifice offered by prophet Ibrahim to show his obedience to God. It is said that prophet Ibrahim offered his own son in sacrifice to the God, before the almighty intervened ultimately. Several goat meat dishes are favored and savored during the festival. Chakna is one of those authentic goat meat recipes which are prepared in the memory of the first sacrifice offered by prophet Ibrahim.

 

Ingredients Prescribed by Chakna Recipe:

Normally goat meat and goat intestine are used in the preparation of chakna recipe. But chakna is also prepared using the lamb meat. Generally lamb intestine called Boti is used in the preparation of the dish. Other than that lamb’s – tongue and stomach is also used in the preparation of the dish. Other than the meat ingredients like onions, water, salt and oil are also used in the preparation of chakna recipes. Normally spices like cloves, ginger-garlic paste, red chili powder, turmeric powder and garam masala is used in the preparation of chakna.

 

Serving and Eating Chaakna Recipes:

Chakna is mostly eaten by itself or served as a side dish for Indian flat breads such as parathas, roomali roti, and naan.

 

Health and Nutritive Value of Chaakna:

Chakna is prepared from the goat’s tripe. Tripe is a good source of protein, calcium, iron, zinc, and niacin. The tripes are slightly high on acidic side and they contain essential fatty acids such as Linoleic or linolenic acids. But it is advised that the people who suffer from cholesterol should not go for the tripe dishes because they are high in saturated fats and cholesterol.
