Avare Kaalu Kootu /Surti Lilva kootu

  Udad dal 2 Teaspoon
  Chana dal 1 Teaspoon
  Coriander seeds 1 Tablespoon
  Black peppercorns 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Cumin seeds 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Methi seed 1⁄4 Teaspoon
  Poppy seeds 1 Teaspoon
  Til 1 Teaspoon (White)
  Dry red chilies 5
  Ghee 2 Tablespoon
  Avarekai 1 Cup (16 tbs) (Available In The Frozen Section In Indian Grocery Stores As Sutra Papdi Lilva)
  Ground nuts 1 Tablespoon
  Grated coconut 1 Teaspoon (Dry Variety)
  Grated coconut 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs) (Fresh Variety)
  Onion 1 Medium, diced
  Turmeric powder 1⁄4 Teaspoon
  Tamarind pulp 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Jaggery 1 Teaspoon
  Garlic 2 Clove (10 gm)
  Oil 2 Teaspoon
  Mustard seeds 1⁄2 Teaspoon

Heat little oil and roast urad dal, chana dal, coriander seeds, pepper, jeera, methi seeds, khus khus, white til and dry red chillies.
Grind to a smooth paste with freshly grated coconut, diced onion, garlic cloves, tamarind paste, jaggery (optional) and ½ cup of warm water. Keep aside.
Heat ghee in a pan. Roast ground nuts, kopra and avare kaalu for few minutes. Add water and cook till soft.
Add the ground paste to cooked beans and simmer for 10 minutes.
Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard. Allow them to splutter. Pour it over the gravy and mix well. Serve hot with chapatti, dosa or rice.
(The gravy will be thick. Add few red chillies as we are adding pepper).

Sounds delicious... which state's specialty is this Sarita? Though the ingredients are quite a counter-full, the method seems easy... the gravy looks so nice and spicy... I'm gonna try this!! thanks :)

Sarita, is this a Kannada recipe. i heard about this Avare Kallu Kootu/Surti livla Kootu recipe, but never got courage to try it. But, here you have made everything so simple... it seems very delicious...will surely give it a try! thanks:)

I can't wait to try this recipe! BTW do you or anyone have a lemon pickle recipe you make? I have so many lemons and I am wanting to make Lemon Pickles. I'd like to try a couple of recipes-yes we love HOT! TIA

Hi Shanti, I have the recipe for lemon pickle. I had prepared it a long time ago. I was actually waiting for the lemon to blend with the masala. Will take a picture and upload the recipe soon.
