Onam Special Kootucurry!

This is a very traditional dish from the heart of Malabar. It is part of the sadya or Feast along with avial and sambar and the rest. It has the goodness of yam, raw plantain and chickpeas.

Ingredients

Chickpeas 1/2 Cup (8 tbs) , soaked overnight
Yam 250 Gram , peeled, diced
Raw plantains 1 Medium , peeled, diced
Grated coconut 1/2 Cup (8 tbs)
Cumin seeds 1 Teaspoon
Red chilli powder 1 Teaspoon
Turmeric powder 1 Teaspoon
Black pepper powder 1 Teaspoon
Salt To Taste
For tempering
Oil 1 Tablespoon
Mustard seeds 1 Teaspoon
Curry leaves 15 Medium
Dried red chili pepper 2 Medium , torn

Directions

GETTING READY

1. In a pressure cooker add the chickpeas. Pour water and close the lid. Cook on medium heat for up to 2 whistles. Reduce the heat to low and cook for another 30 minutes or till the chickpeas are soft and fully cooked. Turn off the heat and let the pressure die down.

2. In a blender blend together grated coconut and cumin seeds till smooth. Set aside.

MAKING

3. In the pressure cooker along with the chickpeas add the diced yam and raw plantain. Season with red chilli powder, turmeric powder, black pepper powder and salt. Stir well and add little water if required. Place it on medium heat and cook up to 1 whistle. Reduce the heat and continue to cook for another 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and let the pressure get released.

4. Remove the lid and pour the coconut mixture into the pressure cooker. Stir well. Return the cooker on to medium heat and let it cook for around 10 minutes. Turn off the heat.

5. TEMPERING: In a frying pan, heat oil. Add mustard seeds. Let them splutter. Add the curry leaves and dried red chillies. Saute for 1 minutes. Put the coconut and continue to fry them till the coconut turns brown and fragrant. Pour it into the curry and close the lid immediately.

SERVING

6. In a serving plate, serve the kootucurry with rice and any curry of choice.
