I would love to try this recipe. My only concern with it is the amount of baking soda. It is known and accepted that high levels of sodium are unhealthy. Do you have suggestions on alternatives to reduce the amount of baking soda and perhaps add something else instead?
sonali's picture
Sona, u can add Eno.

I tried it out. Will go easy on the soda next time. The taste was too good!!!! No need to now delay making idlis because of the excessive preparation required. This is so easy and tasty...!

well presentation is too good . i make it too but i add eno salt instead of baking soda and adds crushed roasted groundnut, onion and finely chopped chillies without its seeds so a to get flavour of chillies only and people like it . But frm now on i will also try to place peas and tomato over it so as to inhence its beauty too

Sonali Great recipe! Semolina is far healthier than white rice. I had wondered if you could make brown rice idli, now semolina is perfect. Love idli and sambhar. Thanks for the recipe

Neat... I've made attempts to make regular idli in the past with miserable results, and your easy recipe actually worked for me! I steamed it in the pressure cooker for about 11 minutes (no microwaveable stand - where do you find those?? Too handy!! :D) Thanks! Keep up the good work

Thank you for appreciating my recipe. The microwave idli stand is available in any Indian grocery store.

Hi. this looks great and I want to try it for my 17mth old. But I can only find Lemon flavored Eno at my grocery store. What was the concern with baking powder? and how much should be used?
sonali's picture
Eno is a far better option...although u could use 1 tsp baking soda if finding eno is difficult.
