Trevti Daal Or Chevti Daal Or Panchmel Dal - Mix Lentil Curry

Bhavna brings you a very healthy and easy to prepare dish.
Ingredients
For the seasoning
  Oil 2 Tablespoon
  Dry whole red chilies 2 Medium
  Mustard seeds 1 Teaspoon
  Cumin seeds 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Asafoetida 1⁄4 Teaspoon
  Curry leaves 5 Medium
The vegetables and the spices
  Onions 1 Cup (16 tbs), chopped
  Green bell peppers 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs), chopped
  Vadi/Garam masala - to taste 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs) (Optional)
  Ginger paste 1 Tablespoon
  Garlic paste 1⁄2 Tablespoon
  Green chili paste 1⁄2 Tablespoon
  Turmeric powder 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Tomatoes 1 Cup (16 tbs), chopped
  Salt To Taste
  Coriander and cumin powder 1 Teaspoon
  Hot water 1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs) (Use as required for cooking the lentils)
The lentils
  Split green gram 1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs) (Moong dal)
  Split bengal gram 1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs) (Chana dal)
  Red lentils 1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs) (Masoor dal)
  Split black gram 1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs) (Urad dal)
  Dry peas 1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs)
  Split peas 1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs) (Tur dal) (Optional)
For the garnishing
  Sugar 1 Tablespoon
  Lemon juice 1 Teaspoon
  Fresh cilantro 1 Tablespoon, chopped finely
Directions

GETTING READY
1. In a bowl mix all the lentils (dals), wash and soak in water for a couple of hours.

MAKING
2. Heat a pan with oil, add the whole dry red chilies, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida and the curry leaves.
3. To the seasoning add the onions and bell peppers, vadi (lentil chunks), stir for a minute.
4. Add ginger paste, garlic paste, green chili paste, turmeric powder and stir again so that the spices do not stick to the bottom of the pan.
5. Add the tomatoes, salt, coriander and cumin powder along with the soaked dals (lentils). Stir well to combine.
6. Add hot water if required, and cook the lentil curry at a low temperature, half covered. Stir occasionally to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
7. Add sugar and fresh lemon juice. Garnish with freshly chopped cilantro leaves and turn off the heat.

SERVING
8. Serve this mixed lentil curry with roti, paratha or naan.
