Chana Dal Onion Chutney

This chutney is very easy to make and will be very nice with dosai and idly.
  Cinnamon piece 1 Small (pattai)
  Clove 1 Small (krambu)
  Cardamon 1 Small (yelakaai)
  Sombu 2 Pinch (sompf)
  Red chillies 3
  Chana dal 2 Tablespoon (kadalai parappu)
  Shredded coconut 3 Tablespoon (fresh)
  Chopped onion 1⁄2
  Crushed tomatoes/2 chopped tomatoes 5 Tablespoon
  Salt 1⁄2 Teaspoon (or more as needed)
  Oil 1 Teaspoon
  Mustard seeds 1 Teaspoon
  Urad dal 1 Teaspoon
  Curry leaves 3

* In pan pour oil add pattai, krambu, yelakaai and sombu.

* Add the red chillies, chana daal and fry till light brown.

* Add chopped onion and fry till translucent, add tomatoes and salt and fry for few mins. Then add shreaded coconut and fry for 2 mins.

* Cool it and grind in mixie with little water.

* In pan pour oil and add the mustard seeds let it splutter, then add urad dal and add curry leaf and pour the grind mix and 1/4 cup of water and bring to boil and remove.

* Ready to serve with idly and Dosai.

Good one. Am sure it makes a great chutney for dosas an idlis.

My son is allergic to besan or chana daal. Any suggestions for a substitute for chana daal ?

To be frank, I don't think you can use anything other than chana daal for this chutney.
