Story
Once upon a time there was an old lady who hated her daughter in law. It was a joint family set-up and every one lived together. Mother in law ruled. At night she would mix two or three daals in a container and the next morning hand these over to the poor newly wed daughter in law. In an elderly tone she would say - My lovely Bahu (daughter-in -law), see I am getting old and at night could not see and by mistake mixed these two daals. Can you please help me with this. I must separate these. You know my Son loves Channa Daal and I want to cook it for him ( of course the son is married to this lovely Bahu). He has been asking me to cook for him. Your cooking is good but he likes mine a bit more. So the poor Bahu Rani sits there seperating the two daals one piece at a time. Well this got to pass the first time but the Bahu Rani soon caught up and realized what she was being asked to do. The next time when she was asked to do the same thing she simply soaked the two daals in a dark container and covered it so that the old lady could not see. The old lady had bad eye sight and refused to wear glasses. Of course she would say " we have eaten Pure Ghee" and used to walk on early morning grass, my eye sight is 20/20 and will remain the same till I die. These are bad times, every one is eating some kind of oil what is that oil " aaaalive paaalive - AH I dont believe in all this. Well when the time came to cook she asked the Bahu rani for the seperated daal. Yes respected Mother in law I have washed the daal(s) with a silent s and have also soaked these for you. I know your hand has been hurting so I did all that for you. Oh you dindt have to do that - the Mother in Law said No - no that is nothing - I want to learn from you to make the best daal that you make so that I can cook for your son exactly the same way that you do. So the Bahu rani had the old lady tricked and they both cooked the mixed daal together. The son loved it - Maa this is great what have you done different today this tastes so good When Maa ate it she loved it too - Hey this tastes excellent - Bahu did you put something else in it while I was watching my TV show The Bahu simply smiled and winked to her husband. She would tell the story back to him in private. And the Kyoti Daal was born.
