|Basmati rice||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Masoor dal||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs), washed and soaked together for 30 minutes in 2 cups water (Malka Dal)|
|Garlic||6 Clove (30 gm), chopped|
|Cinnamon||1 Inch, broken into pieces|
|Garam masala||1 Teaspoon|
|Grated coconut||2 Tablespoon|
|Turmeric powder||1⁄2 Teaspoon|
Mix oil, cummin seeds, onion, garlic, cinnamon, whole garam masala and bay leaf in a large bowl and microwave covered for 3 minutes.
Mix in the coconut and turmeric powder and microwave further for 1 minute.
Mix in the rice, dal with water and salt and microwave for 20 minutes.
If you prefer to have a mushy Khichree, pour in an additional cup of hot water, and microwave further for 5-7 minutes.
Let it stand for 5 minutes, then fork it to loosen up the grains of rice.
When reheating at the time of serving stir in 1/2 cup water and microwave for 5 minutes.
