Mazurkas With Apple Topping

Ingredients
  Sugar 1 Cup (16 tbs)
  Water 1⁄3 Cup (5.33 tbs)
  Apples 3 Pound, pared and thinly sliced
  Grated lemon peel/Grated orange peel 2 Teaspoon
  Salt 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Finely chopped blanched almonds 1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs)
Directions

Prepare and bake mazurkas as directed.
Do not cut into squares.
Combine sugar and water in a large saucepan.
Simmer 5 minutes.
Add apples and lemon peel.
Cook over medium heat until apples are soft, about 5 to 10 minutes; stir frequently to prevent sticking.
If desired, add salt and almonds.
Cook and stir until apples are translucent on edges and mixture clings to the spoon.
Remove from heat.
Cool 15 to 20 minutes.
Spread apple filling over warm baked mazurkas.
Cool completely.
Cut into 2 inch squares.
