Halibut is a popular flatfish from genus Hippoglossus, found in north Atlantic and north pacific oceans. The fish belongs to the right-eye flounders’ family, and is used popularly in the culinary world. The fish got its name from haly (holy) and butt (flatfish), due its immense fame on catholic holy days. The fish weighs between 11 to 13 kilograms, and is blackish grey on top and off-white on the bottom. The halibut is prized as a commercial and game fish. However over fishing has led to a decline in the number of Atlantic halibut.

Halibuts are baked, stewed, roasted, grilled, and barbecued, and prepared in a variety of ways with the use of several ingredients like lemon, herbs, and seasoning agents. It can also be marinated prior to being baked. The fish is often cooked while fresh. Due to extremely low fat content in halibut, it is difficult to cook the fish through smoking process. The fish is quite popular for its firm and dense texture and possesses a clean taste, thus, requiring the use of fewer ingredients to enhance the flavor of the fish.

Popular Halibut Recipes

A few popular halibut recipes have been discussed hereunder:

  • Steamed halibut fillets- salt seasoned fish fillets are cooked for a few minutes in steamer after scattering ginger pieces on top of fillets. The fish is then sprinkled with green onions, drizzled with soy sauce, and served after pouring a hot mix of sesame oil and peanut oil over fish. Cilantro sprigs are used for garnishing the fish.
  • Oven baked buttermilk halibut- the oven baked halibut recipe suggests marinating the fish fillets in a mix of salt and buttermilk for a few hours, before baking them in oven. The fish fillets are dipped into egg and coated with a pulsed mix of Greek seasoning and cracker crumbs prior to the baking process. Butter is also drizzled on the fish fillets before they are baked in oven.
  • Grilled halibut- halibut cooks very nicely on the grill. Halibut steaks are marinated in a mix of garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, basil, parsley, pepper, and salt, and grilled on both sides for a few minutes until flaky.


Halibut is best served with rice along with steamed asparagus or broccoli. It can also be served with salsa of choice, with peach salsa and strawberry salsa being the perfect choices.

Nutrition and Health Facts

Raw halibut of around 204 g provides around 224 calories, obtained from 5 g of fat, 65 mg of cholesterol, 110 mg of sodium, and 42 g of protein. Among fats, only 1 g comprises saturated fats, and the remaining consists of unsaturated fats. Unsaturated fats consist of mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats which are good for heart health. The health of the cardiovascular system would be improved with the aid of including halibut fish in the diet.
