Combine sugar and water in small saucepan.
Cook, stirring occasionally, until sugar melts and caramelizes to a golden brown.
Watch very carefully: The difference between golden brown and burnt is only a matter of seconds.
Immediately drizzle over the kugelhopf.
Do not wait or the caramel will get too dark and begin to harden.
Decorate with strawberry halves, if desired.
NOTE TO COOK: This dessert is not easy to transport but it can be done: I have.
It cannot be covered unless you have the kind of cake plate with cover that will not touch the meringue.
Otherwise the meringue pulls away.
You will have to hold it in your lap on your way to the party.
But it's worth it.
Carry strawberry halves separately.
Refrigerate at party.
Decorate it with the halved strawberries before serving.
