|Baking powder||2 Teaspoon|
|Baking soda||1⁄2 Teaspoon|
|Ground ginger||2 Teaspoon|
|Ground cinnamon||1 1⁄2 Teaspoon|
|Ground nutmeg||1⁄2 Teaspoon|
|Ground cloves||1⁄4 Teaspoon|
|Shortening||3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs), melted|
|Firmly packed brown sugar||3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)|
|Eggs||2 , beaten|
|Molasses||3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)|
|Boiling water||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
Sift dry ingredients.
Combine shortening, sugar, and eggs and mix well.
Blend in molasses and water.
Add to dry ingredients and mix, beating until smooth.
Mixture will be quite thin.
Pour into greased 9-inch square pan.
Bake in preheated moderate oven (350°F.) for about 45 minutes.
Serve with butter or cream cheese.
