Spicy Gingerbread

Ingredients
  All purpose flour 2 1⁄2 Cup (40 tbs)
  Baking soda 1 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Ground cloves 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Cinnamon 1 Teaspoon
  Ginger 1 Teaspoon
  Salt 3⁄4 Teaspoon
  Shortening 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
  Granulated sugar 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
  Egg 1 Medium, unbeaten
  Molasses 1 Cup (16 tbs)
  Hot water 1 Cup (16 tbs)
Directions

Preheat oven to 350°F.
Grease, then line with waxed paper, bottom of 9" by 9" by 2" pan.
Sift flour, soda, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, salt.
In large bowl," with electric mixer at medium speed, mix shortening with sugar, then with egg until very light and fluffy—about 4 minutes altogether; beat in molasses.
At low speed, beat in alternately, just until smooth, flour mixture in fourths and hot water in thirds.
Turn into pan.
Bake 50 to 55 minutes or until cake tester inserted in center of cake comes out clean.
To cool cake, set pan on rack 10 to 15 minutes.
Loosen cake with spatula; place another rack on top.
Invert and lift off pan.
Finish cooling.
Cut into 9 squares.
