German Salad

German salad is a type of salad, which is typical to the nation of Germany. The Germans team up all their main meals with salads. German potato salad is the most favored amongst all salad types enjoyed in Germany. The Octoberfest celebrations in Germany are marked with beer and potato salad. Most of the German salads contain ingredients like cucumber, potato and fishes. Other than that salads are also created by including most of seasonal vegetables that grow in and around Germany.

German Salad Recipe Variants: Introduction, Ingredients and Method of Preparation

  • Kartoffelsalat (German Potato Salads): There are many ways of making a typical German salad using potatoes as the main ingredient. These potato salads are easy to make and serve too. Some of the popular variants of this typical salad include cold potato salad, hot potato salad, sweet potato salad, potato and herring salad, etc. The cold potato salad is best served during the summer holidays, whereas real hot potato salad can be served as a comfort food. It takes about half an hour to prepare a very simple German potato salad from scratch.

    A simple potato salad can be prepared using ingredients like potatoes, salt, dill pickle liquid, mayonnaise, onion, and salt –pepper. The potatoes are peeled and added to the pot of salty hot water. It is allowed to boil there and mixed with other ingredients in a bowl. This salad is sometimes flavored with hard-boiled eggs, unpeeled and chopped apples, celery and radishes.

  • Gurkensalat or German Cucumber Salad: This salad is savored by Germans in all seasons. This creamy cucumber salad is teamed with yogurt, and low-fat sour cream. The salad is garnished with herbs before serving. This salad is prepared using ingredients cucumbers, dill, sour cream, lemon juice, salt and pepper. All the ingredients are combined in a bowl and served with main dish or breads.

  • Tunfischsalat or Tuna Fish Salad: Canned tuna is one of the staple foods in many of the German homes. So, they easily make up the salad out of it by combining the fish with mayonnaise. Tuna salad is mostly teamed with fresh buns, toast, German rye breads, etc. This salad is prepared using tuna, dill pickles, onion, lemon, hard boiled eggs, and mayonnaise. All the ingredients are mixed in a bowl and served with buns or breads.

  • Herringsalat or Creamy Herring Salad: This sweet, and sour, creamy salad is mostly served as a supper. They are also served as a great appetizer with crusty bread or crackers. Pickled herring is used for making the salad. Herring, dill pickles, sour cream and fresh dill is used in the preparation of salad. The herring is combined with sour cream in a bowl and other ingredients are added gradually into it. The salad is served immediately or refrigerated until the serving time.

  • Bohnensalat or Bean Salad: This salad is favored by most of the weight conscious Germans, who make it a point to eat it atleast once a week. Bean salad is also considered a good picnic food by many Germans. This three bean salad is prepared using fresh, thawed or frozen beans. This German salad variant can be prepared using chickpeas, green beans, lima beans, green peas, onion, balsamic vinegar, dry mustard, dried basil or oregano, salt and olive oil. Beans, onions and peas are added to a bowl along with rest of the ingredients, mixed properly and then refrigerated for about 4 hours before serving.
