Classic Fasnacht Donuts
|Milk||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Active dry yeast||1⁄4 Ounce (1 Package)|
|Sifted flour||1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs)|
|Vegetable shortening||1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs)|
|Sugar||1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs)|
|Sifted flour||2 Cup (32 tbs)|
|Vegetable shortening||2 Cup (32 tbs) (For Deep Frying)|
Heat milk slightly and add yeast to dissolve.
Add the 1 1/2 cups flour and beat until smooth.
Cover and let rise until double, 2 hours.
Cream the 1/4 cup vegetable shortening, salt, and sugar.
Beat in egg; stir into yeast mixture.
Add remaining 2 cups flour and mix thoroughly.
Place in greased bowl; turn once to grease surface.
Let rise again until double.
Roll on lightly floured surface to 3/8 inch thickness.
Cut with floured doughnut cutter.
Let rise 45 minutes.
Fry in deep vegetable shortening heated to 375° for 3 to 5 minutes.
Drain on paper toweling.
While still warm, roll in additional sugar or glaze with Confectioners Sugar Glaze.
