Do It Yourself French Onion Soup
|Spanish onions||450 Gram, thinly sliced|
|Brown sugar||2 Teaspoon|
|Boiling beef stock/Water plus stock cube||1 Liter|
|Dry white wine||4 Tablespoon|
|French bread slices||4|
|Grated gruyere cheese/Parmesan cheese||1 Tablespoon|
Heat the butter and oil in a heavy pan, add onions and stir.
Cover and cook over low heat until soft, 10 to 12 minutes.
Stir in the sugar, cover and continue cooking over moderate heat until onions are a deep golden brown.
Add the stock, wine and seasonings to taste.
Cover, and simmer gently for at least 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, toast the bread slowly.
To serve, put a bread croute into each earthenware bowl and pour boiling soup over.
Hand the cheese separately.
