Butter a shallow ovenproof dish.
Prepare the vegetables and simmer in boiling water until they are just tender; they will cook further while being baked.
Drain and arrange in the dish and cover with the sauce.
Sprinkle with crumbs and bake at 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6 for 10-12 minutes, until the top is brown, but be careful not to overcook the vegetables - always a risk with gratins.
