French Onion Soup

Ingredients
  Onions 1 1⁄2 Pound
  Butter 2 Ounce
  Stock/Water 1 1⁄2 Pint
  French bread slices 4
  Cheddar cheese 1 Tablespoon, grated
  Salt To Taste
  Pepper To Taste
Directions

Slice the onions thinly and cook gently in the butter until brown, taking 30 minutes.
Add the stock or water, season well and cook gently for another 30 minutes.
Put slices of bread into the bottom of the soup tureen, pour over the soup and sprinkle on plenty of grated Cheddan cheese.
Put into a hot oven (425-450°F - Gas Mark 6-7) or under the grill to brown.
