Constipation


 


Castor oil is used as a laxative for ages, though it relieves from symptoms related to constipation, it is not recommended to use it regularly. Castor oil is a stimulant laxative very useful for severe constipation. But stimulant laxative if used in long run may lead to chronic diarrhea which can cause electrolyte imbalance and can lower the potassium levels. Actually these laxatives just stimulate the colon and if used for long can weaken the colon muscles. When the colon muscles are weak, peristalsis actions which are important to hold the fecal matter inside your colon are reduced. This is one of the castor oil side effects that is considered harmful. Also you may get dependent on castor oil if you take it for long.


 


Skin and hair 


 


Castor oil when taken in small doses would not harm you skin or hair. Excess application on the skin can make your skin oily. Though castor oil is good for hair, too much of it leads to sticky hair.


 


Castor oil and pregnancy


 


Castor oil is beneficial to induce labor; it acts upon the uterus to cause contraction. However the diarrhea and cramping caused by taking castor oil during labor would lead to dehydration. This is a serious problem faced by pregnant woman. The dehydration in mother increases the chance of the baby passing meconium (first stool) in the amniotic fluid. Meconium if inhaled by the infant can cause serious problems which could even be fatal to the infants. Dehydration worsens the situation as one cannot handle the condition and it decreases the chance of natural birth. Among the side effects of castor oil, this is dangerous to the fetus.


 


Affects infants during Lactation


 


Castor oil is found be useful during lactation, but should be used under proper precaution. When used on the mammary glands, it stimulates the glands and enhances the lactation. But it is known to cause diarrhea in breast feeding infants. Lactating mother should be cautious before using it to avoid the unwanted castor oil side effects.


 


Castor oil is helpful to mankind in many ways, but it is essential to learn the castor oil side effects to use it in the right quantity and at the right time.
