One slice of watermelon would enrich your body with potassium and vitamins A, C, and B6 while keeping you hydrated. However, every food becomes dangerous if taken in large quantity, so does watermelon. Let’s see how does excessive intake of watermelon affects our body.


Diuretic Effect

Excessive eating of watermelon may make your visit to bathroom more frequent because the fruit has high water content that causes diuretic effect.



Sugar content in watermelon is safe if the fruit is eaten in adequate quantity. While, it’s excessive consumption might spill the sugar in the bloodstream and cause a jolt that would result into cramping.  



High level of potassium in the body results into hyperkalemia. Thus, it forms one of common side effects of watermelon as the fruit is a rich source of potassium. A person suffering from hyperkalemia may exhibit following symptoms.

  • Fainting
  • Irregular heart rhythm
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach upset
  • Exhaustion


There is an increased risk of hyperkalemia when a person is already suffering from kidney diseases. So, such individuals should restrict the consumption of watermelon.


To reap the health benefits of this fleshy fruit, one should remain aware of the abovementioned side effects of watermelon and restrict it’s intake to food amount.
