It’s better to know about the side effects of papaya rather than suffering from it as the fruit is accompanied with several adverse effects along with healing properties. Native to Central America, the fruit is known to have several health benefits as it is rich in vitamin A and C. It has been always studied for its nutrient and enzyme content as well as ill effects. Let’s have a look on some of the side effects of papaya.
Some Side Effects Of Eating Papaya
Presence of latex in unripe papaya may cause irritation in individuals sensitive to the fruit. Other allergic reactions associated with papaya are rash, swelling of throat, face, tongue and dizziness which should never be overlooked.
Toxic In High Dose
Fruits, seeds, latex and leaves of papaya are rich in an anthelmintic alkaloid called carpaine. The chemical is beneficial in food amounts as it flushes the parasitic worm from the body but it becomes dangerous and toxic in high dose. This is so because carpaine lowers the pulse rate and adversely affects the nervous system by depressing it.
Unsafe For Pregnant Women
Miscarriage is one of the side effects of papaya which makes it unsafe for pregnant women. The latex concentration in unripe papayas and seeds are known to cause uterine contraction, so pregnant women are advised to avoid eating papaya.
Papaya is known to be a rich source of beta carotene. So, it’s consumption in large quantity results into carotenemia. The effect is harmless but it results into the yellow coloration of soles and palm.
If eaten in large numbers, papaya leads to the formation of ulcers in the esophagus. Excessive eating also results into stomach and abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, so overeating of papaya should always be avoided.
Aggravates The Bleeding Disorder
Papaya is known to trigger the bleeding disorder because of the presence of enzyme papain in it. So, individuals suffering from this health hazard should avoid eating papaya.
Presence of papain enzyme in the fruit results into troubled breathing when the fruit is taken in large amount. In severe situations, individuals also experience tightness in the chest which may prove fatal if not treated on sometime. Many research reports have indicated that the enzyme papain also increases the risk of asthma or rhinitis in many individuals.
These were some of the common side effects of papaya which should never be overlooked. Though the ill effects are not worrisome but they should be treated immediately to avoid any serious health hazards.
