Algae are the seaweeds which occur in both multicellular and unicellular forms. In Latin the term 'algae' means ‘seaweed’. This plant has significantly been used for various purposes in many Southeast Asian countries.
How to use alge in food form is not commonly known. We use algae in food form and household items that we use daily. Algae are also used in some medicines and toothpastes. Using algae as food is very good because the nutritional benefits of algae are known to be extremely high.
More over few types of algae can also be used as a substitute for gelatin. Also, algae are used in the form of bacteria, which is required to make dairy-based items.
Here are examples of algae in food form;
Agar is the best example of using algae as food. Agar is a gelatinous substance made from algae. Agar can be used as an ingredient in many different Japanese desserts. Agar can be used as a laxative, and it can also been used as a vegetarian substitute for gelatin. Sometimes, it is also used as a soup thickener. Agar is very commonly used in jellies, ice creams and deserts, in the southeast Asia.
Alginic Acid is another example of algae in food form. Alginic acid is a viscous, gum-like substance, derived from algae. It can be used as an additive in dehydrated products. Alginic acid can be used extensively in the food processing industry as an ingredient for making soups and jellies.
Carrageenan is a substance which has been derived from the red algae. It can be found near the Irish coastline. It is another way of using algae as food. Carrageenan can be used as a main ingredient in the food products such as ice creams, milkshakes, and sauces, to increase the viscosity of the product. More over carrageenan can also be used as a protein remover by local beer and alcoholic drink manufacturers. Makers of processed and canned meats use it as a substitute for fats. It is believed that the presence of carrageenan also increases the water retaining capacity of meat products.
The Leafy vegetable in sushi rolls is actually algae. Because of its nutritional value green algae can be used in many sushi restaurants. Sushi is a tasty complement to seafood.
Different types of algae are used in many common dairy products. Algae can be used in making of Yogurt, sour cream, mayonnaise, cheese and whipped cream. Agar is a form of algae that is present in processed cheeses and frozen dairy desserts.
So, using algae as food is very healthy because they are a powerhouse of nutrition.
