How To Test Yeast To See If It Is Good To Use

priyam's picture

This article outlines how to test yeast to see if it is good to use. Yeast is an organism that is used for leavening bread, pizza bases etc. Yeast, as we use it today is dormant. The yeast has to be fresh in order to get the desired effect. Sometimes, we tend to store yeast for long periods  of time exceeding its expiry date. But, if the storage has been in a refrigerator or freezer, it is quite probable that the yeast is active and very much usable. Test yeast to confirm whether it is active.

Steps for Testing Yeast Activity

  1. To test yeast for activity, take warm water in a measuring cup.

  2. Check the temperature of water using a thermometer. The ideal temperature is around 115 degrees F. If you do not have a thermometer, approximate the temperature by placing a few drops on your wrist. The water should feel comfortable.

  3. To half cup of warm water, add one teaspoon sugar and 2 teaspoons of yeast.

  4. You can now observe three layers, top yeast film, middle cloudy water and finally at the bottom, the layer of sugar and yeast.

  5. Testing of yeast that is active would yield foams and bubbles within a matter of 15 minutes.

  6. The mixture in the measuring cup would be half foam and half a milky water in case of active yeast.

  7. If the mixture does not foam the test yeast is inactive and should not be used.

Test yeast prior to baking since you would end up with hard loaves of bread otherwise.
