Before I began my culinary adventures, sandwiches to me meant just putting together bread, butter, jam and maybe a step further would mean adding an egg. Although I had eaten sandwiches with various kinds of fillings, it was there somewhere within me that all this is possible only in restaurants. However, stepping into the kitchen on my own was the beginning of my explorations. Whether out of necessity or in the effort to impress hubby dear, the search online and in cookery books began. This search is what enlightened me about the unknown world of sandwiches. Itâs truly a world of its own with a variety of possible fillings, hot, cold and all. Your creativity is the only limiting factor.
The dish was named the âSandwichâ after the 4th Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu. Sandwiches however, were not his discovery. In fact, it was one his favorites as he could munch on something tasty while enjoying his card game. A matter of convenience combined with taste, I guess.
The definition of a sandwich would mean a dish, wherein two or more slices of your choicest bread are put together with layers of the desired filling. You can have a single layer or multiple layers depending on the desired look and also your appetite. Normally the filling would include ingredients like meat, cheese, vegetables or a salad. However, the possible permutations and combinations are innumerable. You can even include fruits for a change. For the base of your filling you could use ingredients like olive oil, mayonnaise or even plain butter.
From here begins my journey with the sandwich. First and foremost what you need for a sandwich is the bread. You could use any bread of your choice. With a variety of breads available today, a sandwich lover is one who stands to gain. Raisin bread, cinnamon bread, pita bread or even croissants could be your choice for your delicious sandwich. One thing you must ensure is that the bread is fresh. Freshly baked bread is the best choice. Stale bread could really spoil the taste of even the tastiest filling. Brown breads or breads baked using a combination of grains is the new age healthy choice.
The next in line is deciding on your sandwich filling. Mayonnaise is one base you just canât go wrong with. Maybe I have a little soft corner when it comes to mayonnaise, actually it is because I just love the taste, flavor and aroma (in fact, just love mayonnaise). Combine with vegetables like cabbage, tomatoes and add to it the meat of your choice. If you are a chicken lover, then itâs definitely going to be a chicken sandwich for you. For beef lovers, a beef sandwich too could be a lot of fun. Pickled vegetables or even readymade sandwich spreads can make a wonderful value addition to your sandwich. Fish or even tofu is one that is worth experimenting with. I do remember the basic chicken sandwich that was among the first ones that I learnt. It continues to be my favorite even today. A quick and delicious bite is what it offers.
Hereâs the recipe: Take in a bowl, add 2 tbsp of mayonnaise. Add to it a pinch of salt and pepper, ½ tsp sugar (as per taste), add 2 tbsp finely shredded cabbage, 1 tbsp of finely shredded carrots and boiled shredded chicken (3 to 4 tbsp). Mix well. Adjust seasoning. Take your bread and add a layer of butter. Spread the mayonnaise-chicken and vegetables mixture. Place two slices of tomato and the second slice of bread. Divine thatâs what I prefer to call it. Â
A sandwich for me is one that can be relished anytime, anywhere. In fact, it is the best option when I am short on time and need something tasty and filling. For a gathering too a sandwich is a great idea, you could lay out all the ingredients and have your guests put together their own sandwiches according to their taste preferences.
Experimenting is the key to discovering your palate preferences and making new discoveries. Enjoy!!
