Krill oil and fish oil, both are daily supplements used by people all over the world for reducing weight, improving heart conditions and getting relief from joint pains and inflammation.  

Both these supplements are beneficial for the body when taken regularly but there are times when one compares krill oil and fish oil to know which one of these is most effective.

Source of Krill oil and fish oil-Similar to shrimp, krill is a marine creature which dwells in cold water. Krill are mostly found in the North Pacific and Antarctic Ocean. These krill are the main foods of whales and are consumed in a large number. There are around 500 million tons of krill in these oceans, out of which approximately 110,000 tons are picked every year for making oil. Neptune Technologies, a Canada based company has the patent to extract these krill. The manufacturing of supplements from extracted krill happens in different parts of the world.

Cod, Tuna and sardines are the fish which are used for making fish oil. Fish oil is also manufactured at different parts of the world.

Benefits of krill oil and fish oil - Both krill and fish oil are beneficial for the human body. The anti-inflammatory properties present in both help gaining comfort in arthritis and joint pain. Also, krill oil and fish oil have the ability to lower the LDL cholesterol and to increase the HDL cholesterol in the body and thus improving the heart condition. Both the oils are also rich in antioxidants.

However, krill oil has more number of antioxidants when compared to fish oil. Canthaxanthin, astaxanthin, and vitamins A, D and E are some of the most powerful antioxidants present in krill oil. These effective antioxidants protect the skin against UV rays and sun by fighting free radicals in the body.

Omega 3 fatty acid content and molecular structure in krill oil and fish oil- Both krill and fish are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. Thetwo important molecules of omega-3 fatty acids are Eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA).  Though, both krill oil and fish oil contain these molecules in same number, the difference lies in the molecular structure of these two components.

,The phospholipids in krill oil are triglycerides of fish oil.Since, our body’s fat structure is also in form of phospholipids, krill oil gets absorbed more faster. 


Side effects of krill oil and fish oil- If a person is prone to allergies, consumption of krill oil and fish oil should be done after a doctor’s recommendation.

Also, since the vitamin content is very high in krill oil and so the body can sometimes have problems due to excessive intake of vitamin.

Shelf life of krill oil and fish oil- The shelf life of fish oil is lesser than krill oil.

Cost of krill oil and fish oil- The cost of krill oil is comparatively more than fish oil.
