Difference Between Mediterranean & Himalayan Salt

Gourmandise's picture

The two widely known varieties of salts – Mediterranean and Himalayan – though made up of the same component (sodium chloride) – vary widely from each other. Be it the color, the usage or the benefits, the differences between Mediterranean and Himalayan salt are numerous. Some of the common differences between Mediterranean and Himalayan salt are listed below:

•    Source:

As the name itself suggests, Mediterranean salt is sourced from the Mediterranean Sea. While harvesting Mediterranean salt, the sea water is evaporated, leaving behind the Mediterranean salt.

Himalayan salt, on the other hand, comes from the salt deposits of the mighty Himalayas. As such, it is commonly found in places like Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan and India.

•    Color:

Mediterranean salt resembles more like the coarse table salt and is white in color. The Himalayan salt, on the other hand is commonly referred to as Pink Salt. Himalayan salt comes with a variety of pink shades – from intense salmon pink to pale pink shades. Thus, in terms of look and color also, they differ widely.

•    Flavor:

The most distinct difference between Mediterranean and Himalayan salt is in terms of their flavors. While both the salts have delicate flavors, they have their uniqueness too. Mediterranean salt is rich with traces of fluoride, potassium, iodine and magnesium and thus, the sodium chloride content is comparatively less. Hence, it is not as intensely salty and normal table salts are.

Himalayan salt, on the other hand, impart a more complex taste, with hints of sulfur, calcium, potassium and magnesium, which in turn makes it milder than the table salt.

•    Uses and Benefits:

Mediterranean salt and Himalayan salt differ in their usage as well. Mediterranean salt is typically used as a gourmet ingredient in cooking. At the same time, it is believed to be an important ingredient for spa treatments, and is used in making bath salts and body scrubs. Thus, the culinary and cosmetic usage of this salt is quite significant

Himalayan salt, on the other hand is more renowned for its medicinal usage. It is believed to improve dental hygiene and cure ear infections, acne, foot fungus, motion sickness, headaches, psoriasis, sore throat, respiratory problems and many other such illnesses. Large blocks of Himalayan salt are also commonly sold as lamps. It is believed that the minerals present in Himalayan salt, when heated as lamp, purify the air and relieves various illnesses.

Thus, there is a marked difference between Mediterranean and Himalayan salt. However, both offer a distinctively subtle and mild flavor in their own way and the various minerals present in them make them much richer than normal salt. In their own different ways, both Himalayan salt and Mediterranean salt mark their significance in our lives in their own ways.
