Oliebollen

Oliebollen (singular oliebol) literally means oil balls and is a traditional Dutch food eaten on the New Year’s eve as well as at various funfairs held throughout the year. Another name for this dish is smoutebollen (meaning lard balls). History tells that Oliebollen were first eaten in the Netherlands, when it was considered a spiritual food, offered to appease the spirits. Sometimes, Oliebollen is also referred to as Dutch donut in English.
