Swiss Cheese Squares
|All purpose white flour||2 Cup (32 tbs)|
|Baking powder||2 1⁄2 Teaspoon|
|Baking soda||1⁄2 Teaspoon|
|Shortening||1⁄3 Cup (5.33 tbs)|
|Sourdough starter||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|Buttermilk||1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)|
|Grated swiss cheese||1 Cup (16 tbs)|
|Egg||1 , beaten|
|Poppy seeds||3 Tablespoon|
Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Cut in shortening until mixture resembles dry cornmeal.
Add sourdough starter and enough milk to form soft dough that cleans side of bowl.
Add Swiss cheese; knead lightly into dough.
Pat or roll dough to 1/2 inch thick.
Cut into squares, using serrated knife or cookie cutter.
Brush tops with beaten egg.
Sprinkle with poppy seeds.
Place squares on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake in preheated 450Â°F oven 10 minutes or until golden brown.
