Cherry Meringue Squares

Ingredients
  Butter/Margarine 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
  Brown sugar 1⁄4 Cup (4 tbs)
  Cake and pastry flour 1 Cup (16 tbs)
  Baking powder 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Salt 1⁄2 Teaspoon
  Maraschino cherries 6 Ounce
  Egg whites 2
  Cream of tartar 1⁄4 Teaspoon
  Brown sugar 1 1⁄4 Cup (20 tbs)
  Vanilla extract 1⁄2 Teaspoon
Directions

Cream butter or margarine and 1/4 cup brown .sugar together.
Sift flour, baking powder and salt, and blend thoroughly with sugar mixture.
Pat into 8-inch square pan, and bake at 350 °F. 15 minutes.
Sprinkle with quartered maraschino cherries.
Beat egg whites until frothy; add cream of tartar, and beat until soft peaks form.
Gradually add 1 1/4 cups brown sugar, and continue beating until stiff.
Fold in vanilla.
Spread me-ringue evenly over baked layer, and bake 25 minutes at 350°F.
When cool cut into 24 squares.
