How To Sterilize Beer Making Equipment

Sterilize beer making equipment periodically as the impurities would aggravate growth of harmful bacteria and also changes the taste of the beer. Beer is prepared with hops, barley, yeast and water. These ingredients are put through mashing process to get a liquid extract known as wort.  This is sweet substance helps the beer to go through fermentation. Before brewing process it is essential to sterilize beer making equipment. The contaminants are potent enough to kill the yeast that is one of the main ingredients used to make beer. Clean workplace before sterilization


 


Before starting the sterilization process, clean your hands and work place thoroughly. Take rubbing alcohol and pour it in a spray bottle. Spray the alcohol in the places of the equipment that is used by the beer making ingredients. Use a dry, clean cloth to wipe the excess alcohol spilled on the work place.


Cleaning and sterilizing equipment


Use bottle brush and liquid detergent to scrub and clean the bottles. Take off the labels and wash the bottles thoroughly. Keep the bottles upright on the oven. Heat the oven at 350 F and then bake for 90 minutes. Remove the bottles from the oven and place them on room temperature allowing it to cool.


Use bleach to sterilize bottles


You can also use bleach to sterilize the bottles. In a large container, pour boiling water and put 1tbsp of bleach to the water. Immerse the bottles in the bleach water and allow it to seep for 20 to 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, take the bottles from the water and drain them. Pour hot water and rinse the bottles. Place them in a dry place.


Fill isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle. Ignite after spraying alcohol on the surface of the utensils. Let the alcohol burn off.  Be careful while igniting; wipe the excess alcohol spilled over the work area


Cleaning other utensils used in beer brewing


Use dishwasher to clean fermentation buckets, tubes and plastic fittings. Dishwasher cannot clean the jugs that have a small neck, so scrub them using bottle brush. While cleaning plastic utensils, use non scented liquid soaps or a diluted solution as plastic can absorb the soapy odor.


Most of the brewing utensils are made of aluminum or stainless steel. Mild detergents can be used to clean them, also for heavy duty needs, buy good cleaners from the stores. Do not use bleach to clean stainless steel or aluminum as it takes away the protective layer leaving a metallic taste to your beer.


Use the above steps to sterilize beer making equipments. Sterilizing equipments not only removes bacteria and fungi but retains the taste of the beer.
