A cookie press is available in many varieties. It is a hollow cylinder that has a disk and plunger to press the dough out. The cookie press has several metal or plastic disks. Decorative designs are cut into these disks.

A few cookie presses come with decorating tips. Use a cookie pastry press tip to decorate pastries and cookies instead of the usual pastry bag. Usually, about 12 or 14 templates with about four pastry tips come along with each cookie pastry press.

Here are a few tips for using a cookie pastry press.

Always use recipes that are for cookie pastry press only.  Follow the instruction manual.

Before you use a cookie pastry press, thoroughly rinse all the parts of the press with warm water and dry them.

All solid ingredients have to be small. It is better to chop and use them.

When using a cookie pastry press do not grease the cookie sheet. This may make the sheet to stick to the press.

Make the dough with flour, butter, salt, vanilla and egg. Place the dough in the refrigerator for about two to three hours. Remove it from the refrigerator and allow it to come down to room temperature. The firmness of the dough may spoil the press.

Use a cookie pastry press to make cookies with this dough. Place the dough in the cylinder. Choose a disk and lock it. Press the handle until the dough begins to come out. The dough takes the shape of the disk on the cookie sheet.

Continue doing experiments using a cookie pastry press until you get the right designs. Bake the cookies in an oven set at 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
