Scotch Egg

Scotch egg refers to hard boiled egg (de-shelled) and deep fried after giving it a sausage covering and coating in breadcrumbs. Scotch eggs go perfectly well with pickles and salads. The dish back to the year 1851 when the food store Fortnum & Mason (London) invented the dish. They are served generally as an appetizer with a tasty dip or as part of breakfast menu.

 

 

 ‘Scotch Eggs’ are typical traditional dish, which is made by wrapping hard-boiled egg in a mixture of breadcrumbs and sausage meat. It is the deep fried and served hot or cold. The dish is believed to have got its name in 1851, because it was originally made of scotch beef. It was first created by the English firm ‘Fortnum and Masons’. Scotch Eggs are popular in the pubs of Scotland, England, and Ireland. It was believed that the dish did not origin in Scotland; instead it was found in England. It was also noted that, years back the Scotch Eggs were also known as the ‘Bird’s Nest’.

Though popular as a Scottish dish, the dish was re-discovered in  1738 by the British department store ‘Fortnum and Masons’. It was created as a snack for the coach travelers from London to Piccadilly.  The first printed reference of the recipe can be found in Mrs. Rundell’s cookery book– ‘A New System of Domestic Cookery’ in the 1809 edition.

For preparing these eggs, one would require hard-boiled egg, sausage mixture, and breadcrumbs. The eggs are shelled and rolled and then coated with breadcrumbs and deep fried. Once it is fried it can be halved into pieces and served. Scotch Eggs are often served cold along with salads and pickles. The Scotch Eggs are packed and made available in most of the British supermarkets, motorway service stations, and convenience stores.

The dishis thought to have originated from the Mogul dish ‘Nargisi Kofta’. A few other variations to the Scotch Eggs recipe are ‘Savory eggs', 'Picnic eggs', 'Party eggs', or 'Snack eggs' in the United Kingdom. The British style Pubs in the United States also serve the Scotch Eggs, with varieties of sauces like the Ranch dressing, Hot sauce, Hot mustard sauce, etc. Scotch Eggs are served in sticks at the Minnesota State Fair. The ‘Eierbal’, is a similar snack from Northern and Eastern Netherlands. Scotch Eggs are also known as ‘Vogelnestje’ which means bird’s nest as it contain egg, in Netherlands and Belgium.
