Cleaning tuna is one of the easiest culinary skills to learn. In fact, in several culinary schools, beginners start their lessons by learning how to clean tuna. What’s more, fresh tuna is not only delicious but highly nutritious too and once you know how to clean it, you can include this fish more frequently in your diet.

Steps to Clean Tuna


  1. Hold tuna under running water.

  2. Place on cutting board.

  3. Hold tuna by the tail and using the knife scale the fish from tail to head.

  4. Wash under running water.

  5. Place on cutting board.

  6. Make a long cut from head to tail on the belly.

  7. Do not cut into the intestines.

  8. Reach the gills through the mouth and tug at the entrails.

  10. Use a spoon to scrape out remaining guts in any from the insides.

  11. Cut fins off.

  12. Discard waste parts immediately.

  13. Take a large bowl and fill with water.

Tips to Clean Tuna


  • Wash hands and work area clean after working with tuna.

  • Discard all inedible parts as soon as possible.

  • Ensure that no innards are left behind in the tuna,  since these can make you sick.
