Some foods are power foods for the brain, while others have the reverse effect. A diet that is high on fat, sugar and processed food, if consumed during early childhood, will result in poor IQ levels. This was discovered in a study published by the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. They reached this conclusion after studying the diets of nearly 4,000 children. Spinach

Remember Popeye the Sailorman and his love for spinach? It seems that he was onto something after all. There are many healthy nutrients in this green leafy vegetable which help improve a person's learning capacity and motor functions. Spinach can also reduce the chance of stroke and neurological issues leading to brain damage. Cooked or raw, this is indeed a veggie delight.


Avocados

Avocado is another power food which can improve the functions of the brain. As this fruit has high levels of unsaturated fat, it keeps the blood flow healthy, which in turn is good for the proper function of the brain. Avocados can also lower blood pressure which helps reduce the risk of hypertension, making it a good power food for the brain.


Salmon

Unlike farm raised salmons, the wild ones have high levels of Omega – 3 and other essential fatty acids. This will help reduce the risk of stroke, and improve the quality of the brain and arteries. This pink fish is also a good source of lean protein. This power food can be eaten in many forms – raw, grilled, cooked, baked... the options are plenty.


Blueberries

Blueberries are also called brain berries. It has been proven that blueberries can considerably reduce age related slowing of the brain. It can also help keep diseases like dementia and Alzheimer's at bay. 


Eggs

Have your eggs scrambled or poached, because studies have proven that this is a power food. As the yolk contains some amount of chlorine, the lack of which can lead to mental decline, this is one power food for the brains.
