If you are in Japan or at a Japanese restaurant and you feel like having a bowl of healthy unpolished brown rice with your stir fried vegetables, then you should ask for Genmain Gohan.  How to eat Genmain Gohan? Oh, there is absolutely nothing to it. It is easy to prepare and goes well with a variety of side dishes. Here is some interesting information about Genmai Gohan:-

Genmai Gohan served with some stir fried vegetables.

In Japan rice is usually found in four forms: Genmai, Haigamai, Hakumai and Mochigome. Genmai Gohan is the most nutritious rice. (Gohan means rice)

Well cooked Genmai Gohan or Japanese brown rice is not hard to chew and can even be had without any seasoning like they have it in Japan. Actually, the nice nutty flavor of the rice makes it easy to have this rice without seasoning.

The Genmain Gohan is not as sticky as the normal sticky white rice and so doesn’t leave you feeling stuffed and full. It is the perfect example of a healthy option for your everyday meals.

Even though it is not as sticky as white rice it can still be eaten with chopsticks

At home I often serve stir fried vegetables on a bed of hot Genmai Gohan along with some fried egg or tofu. You can also serve roast or pan-fried meat or fish with this rice. Genmai Gohan goes along with a lot of side dishes so keep experimenting at home.

Given below are a few simple instructions on how to make Genmai Gohan:

  • Wash 13 oz of Genmai in a bowl till the water is clear and drain the water off and keep aside.
  • Put the washed rice in 21 fl.oz of water and leave it in the refrigerator for 60 to 120 minutes.
  • Drain and save the water.
  • When you are ready to cook add the rice, water and salt to taste in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook over medium to high heat for close to 5 minutes.
  • When you see the steam, reduce the heat to low and continue cooking for 50 more minutes.
  • Once cooked let the Genmai rest in the saucepan it self for 15 to 20 min with the lid on.
  • Now remove the lid and mix the rice and soften it.
