Apple Dumplings

Apple dumplings is an innovative way to serve apples for dessert. Placed in a dumpling made of sugar, flour and milk, the apple dumplings are baked with syrup poured over them. Apple dumplings are best served warm with cream.
  Sugar 1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs)
  Water 1 1⁄2 Cup (24 tbs)
  Cinnamon 1⁄4 Teaspoon
  Nutmeg 1⁄4 Teaspoon
  Red food coloring 10 Drop
  Butter/Margarine 3 Tablespoon
  Enriched flour 2 Cup (32 tbs), sifted
  Baking powder 2 Teaspoon
  Salt 1 Teaspoon
  Shortening 3⁄4 Cup (12 tbs)
  Milk 1⁄2 Cup (8 tbs)
  Apples 6 Medium, pared and cored

Combine sugar, water, spices, and food coloring; bring to boiling.
Remove from heat; add butter.
Sift dry ingredients together; cut in shortening till mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Add milk all at once and stir just until flour is moistened.
On lightly floured surface, roll to between 1/8 and 1/4 inch thick into 18x12 inch rectangle.
Cut into 6 inch squares.
Place whole apple in each square.
Sprinkle each apple generously with sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg; dot with butter.
Moisten edges of squares.
Fold corners to center and pinch edges together.
Place 1 inch apart in ungreased 11 1/2x 1 1/2 inch baking pan.
Pour the syrup over dumplings; sprinkle with sugar.
Bake at 375° 35 minutes, or till apples are done.
Serve warm with cream
