Stinger drink refers to a duo cocktail (mixed drink containing a spirit and a liquer) drink made mixing creme de menthe and any spirit. It is most often had as a dessert cocktail along with chocolate desserts. The spirit used in most recipes is brandy and the crème de menthe is the white variety. Stinger drink is a social drink particularly fancied among the sophisticated social lot during parties and similar events.
The origins of stinger drink is not quite clear although its recipe has appeared in bartender's recipe books published back in 1917 in a book called Tom Bullock's Ideal Bartender.
In its realm of fame, it was regarded as a great "nightcap" over a night out in New York. In the 1957 film Kiss Them For Me several scenes are featured with the main characters relishing Stinger cocktails. The Stinger drink is also mentioned in several scenes in the film The Apartment in 1960. The drink has also made appearance in an episode of "Love Among the Ruins," known as Mad Men positioned in 1963, showing a man buying stinger to Peggy Olson at a bar.
Stinger drink is easy to make and takes a few ingredients. The ingredients needed to make the cockltail are brandy, white creme de menthe and crushed ice. The cocktail shaker is filled with ice to which brandy is added followed by creme de menthe. The drink is shaken well after which it is strained and poured into a short glass along with crushed ice. A fancier version of the cocktail would be by replacing brandy with Cognac in the drink.
Stinger drink can be assembled and served in a short glass to appear attractive. A short glass can be filled with crushed ice followed by pouring the brandy in it and again the creme de menthe. A short straw can be placed in the drink before serving.
Vodka stinger drink recipe makes use of the Russian standard vodka along with creme de menthe.
A tequila stinger drink is made using tequila along with white creme de menthe.
Variations in the recipe can also include mixing of more than one liquor in the drink along with crème de menthe. It could be mixing of brandy along with other liquors such as vodka and tequila.
