Bacardi Cocktail

The Bacardi Cocktail is an IBA Official Cocktail. It is a clear, cool drink and has the Bacardi rum as its main ingredient. A classic cocktail, it is generally served as a 'pre-dinner' drink. Very popular and consumed the world over, there are many versions of this cocktail, but the hardcore original version is the most popular.

Origin of Bacardi Cocktails

The cocktail was, to begin with, the same as the Daiquiri. It contained rum, lime juice and sugar. During the early 20th century, the drink started separating itself from the Cuban Daiquiri. The Grenadine version of the cocktail originated in the US while the traditional non-red Bacardi company method of preparing the cocktails originated from Cuba.

The very first citation of the cocktail is found in Hugo Ensslin's 1917 release 'Recipes for Mixed Drinks' and the original version called for the use of Bacardi rum, lime juice and Gum Syrup. The Bacardi Cocktail again appeared in 1937 in 'Bacardi Some of its Many Uses' and the ingredients this time were Bacardi White, lime juice and sugar.

Since their first appearances, the cocktails have evolved in many ways and there are many different recipes to make the drinks in different ways. The Bacardi Cocktail was placed in the Before-Dinner Cocktail' category of the IBA Official Cocktails categories in January of 2008.

Ingredients and Method of Preparation of Bacardi Drinks

In its original form, the recipe the cocktail calls for the use of Bacardi light rum, lime juice and sugar syrup. More modern versions of the drink generally have both sugar syrup as well as grenadine syrup. In some bars, sour mix is often used instead of lime juice, but the fresh juice is believed to make a lot of difference to the drink's taste.

Preparation time of the Bacardi Cocktail is about 3 to 4 minutes. All the ingredients are poured into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes and mixed well by shaking. The concoction is strained into a chilled glass and the drink is ready to be served.

Serving Bacardi

The cocktail is served straight up, without any ice, in a Cocktail or Martini glass. Garnishing is strictly optional. The drink is mostly served without any garnishing.

Trivia

The cocktails and their popularization are considered to be one of the most excellent examples of effective marketing in history. In 1936, the Bacardi Company brought various bartenders before court who were using rums other than Bacardi to prepare the cocktail while calling it the Bacardi Cocktail. On April 28, 1936, the New York Supreme Court ruled that the cocktail must be made only with Bacardi rum and starting 1941, all the advertisements run by the company carried this ruling.
