Cucumber Dip

Cucumber dip is a dipping sauce made of grated cucumber and other ingredients like cream cheese or yoghurt, mayonnaise, onion, garlic and seasonings. It is served as a condiment with fresh vegetables or crackers, and adds a cool refreshing flavor to these dishes.

 

Cucumber Dip Preparation Overview

Ingredients: The ingredients suggested by the cucumber dip recipe include cream cheese, sour cream or yoghurt as a base, with mayonnaise as an additional ingredient as per some recipes. Grated or finely chopped cucumber is common to all recipes, while chopped onions, green chilies, chives, parsley or celery are used as per different recipe variations. Flavoring agents usually include garlic salt, mustard powder, dill weed, etc. Seasonings of salt, sugar and pepper are added as per taste.

Method of Preparation: The dip is prepared simply by mixing well all ingredients. Yoghurt may need to be thickened by allowing extra water to pass through a cheese cloth, and may need to be whisked well before use to prevent formation of lumps.

Cucumber Dip Recipe Variations

Greek Cucumber Dip: This dip is made with finely chopped cucumbers, yoghurt, crushed garlic, olive oil, fresh dill and lemon juice. The yoghurt is thickened by sieving through a cheese cloth. Salt is sprinkled on the cucumber and it is allowed to stand for some time, after which it is pressed dry. The ingredients are combined together and chilled, and then served with sliced vegetables.

Cucumber-Garlic Dip: This version has a pronounced garlic flavor and is made with minced garlic, diced cucumber, cream cheese, sour cream, diced onion, salt and pepper.

Cucumber Onion Dip: This variant contains shredded cucumber, chopped onion, sour cream, salad dressing, salt and pepper. It is served chilled with vegetable strips.

Cream Cheese-Cucumber Dip: The dip is made with cream cheese, mayonnaise, grated cucumber, grated onion, salt and pepper. Excess water is removed from the grated cucumber, after which all the ingredients are blended together, adding enough mayonnaise to make a spreading consistency. The dip can also be used as a bread-spread.

Cucumber Yoghurt Dip: It is made with cucumbers, garlic, yoghurt, salt and pepper. The cucumber and garlic are processed in a blender till smooth and then, mixed with the remaining ingredients. It is served with raw vegetables.

Dill-Cucumber Dip: The dip is made of chopped cucumbers, cream cheese, mayonnaise, lemon juice, hot pepper sauce and dried dill weed. The ingredients are mixed together to make the dip.
