Stroke Diet

Stroke diet is the diet which refers to foods or food groups that aid in alleviating the after effects of stroke or curb the onset of stroke. Scientists say that diet and stroke are inter related. Obesity and overweight are the established risk factors for stroke. The severity of stroke can be curbed up to a large extent with the help of foods that inhibit the markers that lead to the condition.

 

A well-balanced stroke diet is recommended for the recovery from the stroke, which keeps the blood pressure levels in check and also aids in weight balance. A diet rich in fiber and potassium are specifically recommended for recovering from stroke.

 

Diet for Stroke: Characteristics
A typical stroke diet aimed at curbing the onslaught of strokes should be enriched with:

  • Fruits and Vegetables: They contain antioxidants which aid in counteracting the damage from free radicals.  According to a British study, the people who regularly consume fruits are likely to reduce the severity of strokes by about 32%. Also a diet high on fruits and vegetables will help in preventing hemorrhage and stroke. This will also reduce likelihood of internal bleeding.
  • Fish: The fish’s rich in omega-3 such cold-water fish mackerel, salmon are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. The Dutch researchers found that people in Netherlands daily consume fish for food and lowers instance of strokes were observed in them when compared to non fish eaters.
  • Vitamins: Foods rich in Vitamin B is strongly recommended as a part of stroke diet. The Vitamin B aids in reducing the levels of homocysteine. Homocysteine is one compound which increases the chances of risk and cardiovascular disease too. Vegetables like pea, carrots, spinach, wheat germ and fishes should be consumed for the regular supply of Vitamin B.
  • Pottasium : Foods high in potassium are recommended as the part of the diet aimed at reducing stroke. The potassium is known to aid in prevention of blood pressure which is one of the prime stroke inducing factors. The risk of strokes can be lowered by incrementing the potassium intake. Foods like beans, whole grains, fish and poultry should be eaten in large amounts to gain dietary potassium.
