Rheumatoid Arthritis Diet

Rheumatoid Arthritis diet is the prescriptive diet conceptualized with a thought to ease the joint pain and the inflammation of the tissues surrounding the joint that is clinically known as Rheumatoid Arthritis or RA. Other organs may also be affected by this autoimmune disease. Autoimmune disease is defined as a disorder of immune system where healthy tissues are misunderstood as foreign substances and the immune system fights with them resulting in damage to the body.

Rheumatoid arthritis is often preceded with a host of symptoms such as appetite loss, general fever, fatigue, weakness and swallowing. However, RA is mainly characterized by joint pain and stiffness. A professional dietician or healthcare expert selects suitable food items by keeping in mind the social, emotional and cultural lifestyle of the individual.

Every individual suffering from RA is also treated as distinctively different, hence diet is planned in different ways. Following are some suggestions that can be followed while planning a diet for RA patient. This diet also helps in reducing the possibilities of repetition of this medical problem.

  • Multivitamins and minerals – These nutrients are high in antioxidants and provide relief in joint pain and even relieves inflammation. Either diet should include both these nutrients or supplements can also be taken in case of deficit supply. Vitamin A, vitamin C and E along with iron, copper and zinc are the common minerals and vitamins that help in fighting free radicals damaging the tissues. Coffee, tea, bran, fresh fruits and vegetables contain these nutrients and should be included abundantly in RA diet.
  • Right fat – Right kind of fat inclusion in the Rheumatoid Arthritis Diet is quite essential as different fats show different results in the body suffering from RA. Fat releases a chemical called prostaglandins that either harms the patient or may even provide benefit. Fats containing prostaglandin E1 and E3 are helpful in blocking the swelling of glands and also relieve in pain and inflammation. On the other hand, meat and cooking oils release prostaglandin E2 that induces the inflammation. Therefore, it is extremely important to choose the right kind of fat. Oily fish and dishes made with sunflower, pumpkin and sesame seed oils are helpful in easing inflammation.
  • Exculsion diet – this diet is basically designed for the RA patients by excluding certain foods that induce joint pains, allergies and inflammation. In many cases, citrus foods, dairy products, wheat-products and vegetables from Solanacae family are excluded. However, exculsion diet is formulated by tracking the foods habits of the patient for quite some time. An allergy test can also give the correct statistics of foods casing allergy. Allegric foods are generally excluded from the diet for at least 2-3 weeks to check the results. This diet has proved tremendously beneficial for RA patients and even cured the disease for some people.
